The Night Lester Patrick Played Goalie at Age 44

Lester Patrick • Canada

One of the most famous moments in hockey history happened during the 1928 Stanley Cup Final between the New York Rangers and the Montreal Maroons.

During Game 2, Rangers goalie Lorne Chabot was injured. At the time, substitution rules were much stricter, and the Rangers suddenly had no regular goalie available.

Standing behind the bench was the team’s manager and coach, Lester Patrick. At 44 years old, and long removed from his playing prime, he stepped onto the ice and took over in goal.

Patrick held his nerve, made key saves, and helped the Rangers win in overtime. The Rangers eventually won the Stanley Cup.

The episode became one of hockey’s enduring legends and is a big reason Lester Patrick remains such a compelling figure in sports history.
